My professional background is as a first responder. One of the key elements that makes an emergency scene go well is a well executed Size-Up. The size up is when the first arriving apparatus tells everyone what is actually going on.
It might sound something like this:
Engine 5 on scene of a two story wood frame residential structure. Flames showing from front window. Engine 5 making a fast attack. Next in company hydrant 100 feet to our rear.
Or:
Engine 5 on scene of a large computer processing facility nothing showing will be investigating.
Both examples give additional units information on how to proceed when they come on scene.
When it come to your child and Aritificial Intelligence, you probably did not get an accurate size up. You may have heard varying rhetoric about ChatGPT becoming Skynet or taking your job. Or the counter point that it is going to change the way you do everything. If you do not work in the technology field you may be concern and confused on how to proceed.
Technology moves fast for this generation and it is hard to keep up. It would be wonderful if I could give you a short direct size up of AI, but I am probably like you, AI had been used in the schools before I knew that it existed. Now being faced with the reality that my children will be growing up with this technology I felt the need to investigate what this means for their development of critical thinking and writing skills.
I am willing to bet if you sought this page out you have similar fears to mine. I want to share what I have found out so that you can help your kids navigate this new technology. In the following posts I will be defining the terms around AI, how it works, what it means for academic skills, and recomendations for working with AI.
My hope is to demystify this technology and help you and your family make informed decision about how and when to use AI.
Thank you,
Josh
