Napoleon
Napoleon, that is the name my six-year-old kindergartener chose to be referred to in this study. He really likes history cartoons on YouTube.
Napoleon has been exposed to technology since he is the youngest of four. He routinely watches YouTube videos along with video games that his brothers play. He can operate the voice activated AI systems in our home. He enjoys superheroes and characters from Greek Mythology (which surprised me that he would pick Napoleon for his alias not Achilles).
We followed Exercise Six from the text.
Prompt Engineering: Specific Style: Ask students to exercise their creativity for explanations or summaries delivered “in the style” of someone famous.
I had him interact with ChatGPT. First, we planned out some ideas on what he would say to the ChatGPT. After some technical difficulties we were able to get it working and Napoleon and ChatGPT had a little bit of a conversation. Having a human voice made this seem normal, but still robotic in a sense.
What follows is the exchange between Napoleon and ChatGPT. I left the misspeaks that often happen with young children to show that the ChatGPT can still determine what is being asked of it.
Napoleon: Tell a story about Jeff Bezos by Leonardo da Vinci.
ChatGPT:
Once upon a time in a parallel universe where time and space intertwine, Leonardo da Vinci stumbled upon a peculiar contraption. Hidden amidst gears and gizmos, he discovered a portal leading to the future. Through this portal, he caught a glimpse of a man named Jeff Bezos, a titan of commerce and innovation.
In this vision, Leonardo observed Bezos, a modern-day Medici, wielding his vast wealth like a Renaissance patron. Bezos, with the confidence of a Medici prince, embarked on a quest to conquer the cosmos. He dreamed of colonizing space, envisioning a future where humanity could thrive beyond the confines of Earth.
Inspired by Bezos’ ambition, Leonardo began sketching designs for fantastical flying machines, drawing parallels between Bezos’ rockets and his own visions of flight. In his mind’s eye, he saw Bezos as a modern-day Icarus, reaching for the heavens with wings of steel and fire.
But as Leonardo delved deeper into the mysteries of this future world, he also glimpsed the shadows lurking beneath Bezos’ empire. He saw the plight of workers toiling in vast warehouses, their humanity overshadowed by the relentless pursuit of efficiency. He witnessed the environmental toll of Bezos’ ventures, the earth scorched and scarred in the name of progress.
Intrigued by this complex figure, Leonardo continued to observe Bezos, painting a portrait of a man caught between the heights of ambition and the depths of moral quandary. For in the tapestry of history, even the greatest visionaries are bound by the threads of their own humanity.
Napoleon: I tell the story of Jeff Bezos.
ChatGPT: Absolutely! What aspect of Jeff Bezos’ story would you like to focus on? His entrepreneurial journey, his impact on technology and commerce, or perhaps something else?
Napoleon: How we got super rich.
ChatGPT: Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, became super rich through a combination of innovative ideas, relentless ambition, and a bit of luck. He started Amazon in 1994 as an online bookstore operating out of his garage. By recognizing the potential of e-commerce early on, Bezos expanded Amazon into a one-stop shop for virtually everything, from books to electronics to groceries.
As Amazon grew, Bezos diversified the company’s offerings, introducing services like Amazon Prime, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Kindle e-readers. These ventures not only generated substantial revenue but also positioned Amazon as a dominant force in multiple industries.
Additionally, Bezos’ willingness to take risks and invest heavily in long-term growth contributed to his wealth. Despite facing skepticism from investors, Bezos prioritized customer satisfaction and market expansion over short-term profits, a strategy that ultimately paid off handsomely.
Furthermore, Amazon’s aggressive expansion into new markets and industries, coupled with Bezos’ strategic acquisitions and investments, solidified his position as one of the wealthiest individuals in the world. Through it all, Bezos’ vision, determination, and willingness to disrupt traditional business models propelled him to super-rich status.

Napoleon: My name is Napoleon.
ChatGPT: Hello, Napoleon! What can I do for you today?
Napoleon’s Dad: Where did you get your information from?
ChatGPT: I don’t have direct access to external sources or the internet. Instead, I’ve been trained on a diverse range of data, including books, articles, and websites, up until January 2022. So, I can provide information based on what I’ve learned during my training. If you have any specific questions or topics you’d like to know more about, feel free to ask!
Napoleon: How long have you been alive for?
ChatGPT: I don’t have a physical presence or life span like humans do. I exist as a software program developed by OpenAI, so I don’t have a lifespan in the traditional sense. However, I’ve been operational and available for conversations since my creation.
Napoleon: But how long have you been alive for?
Chat GPT: I’ve been operational since my creation, which was several years ago. So, you could say I’ve been “alive” for as long as I’ve been available to chat with users like you!
Napoleon: Why the poem?
ChatGPT: I included the poem to add a creative touch to the story and to evoke a sense of wonder and intrigue. Poems can often capture emotions and imagery in a unique way, enhancing the storytelling experience. Plus, it adds a bit of flair to the narrative about Jeff Bezos and Leonardo da Vinci, don’t you think?
Napoleon: Write a poem about my dad. By Dr. Seuss.
ChatGPT: In a house on a hill, where the sky meets the trees,
Lived a dad with a smile, as wide as you please.
He worked hard each day, with love in his stride,
Teaching lessons of kindness, with arms open wide.
His laugh was like music, a joyous refrain,
Bringing warmth to our hearts, like sunshine after rain.
He’d tell us tall tales, with a twinkle in his eye,
Of adventures and dreams that reached up to the sky.
With hands worn from labor, and a heart pure and true,
He’d hug us so tight, like a warm, cozy stew.
He’d whisper, “My child, you’re my pride and my joy,
Go forth and be brave, my dear girl or boy.”
So here’s to my dad, my hero, my friend,
Whose love knows no limits, whose kindness won’t end.
In the story of life, he’s the star of the show,
My dad, oh so dear, with a heart all aglow.
Napoleon: Are you a person?
ChatGPT: I’m not a person. I’m an artificial intelligence language model created by OpenAI called GPT-3. I’m here to assist and chat with you, providing information and engaging in conversation.
As I pondered Napoleon’s exchange with ChatGPT, was how honest it seemed. It explained that it was not a human or was alive. It explained that it was a language model all very much in a conventional tone. Napoleon found it entertaining but even asking it to produce content, he did not seem that it was all that interesting to him. The excitement seemed more in the interaction with CHATGPT. Not the content that it created. I would recommend supervision and reminding the child that the AI is not a person.
